PID is where most ADT tickets start. You do not need every optional field memorized — you need the ones that break feeds.

The spine of PID

PID-3Identifier list (MRN, account…) with type codes
PID-5Name as family^given^middle
PID-8Administrative sex (Table 0001)
PID-11 / PID-13Address and home phone

Full table: PID reference. Spec product: HL7 v2.5.1.

Penford’s two identifiers

Penford often sends:

PID-3 = 10028471^^^PMC^MR ~ A7001001^^^PMC^AN

Repetition 1 is the medical record number (type MR). Repetition 2 is the account (type AN). Labs that require PID-18 can map from the AN repetition instead of inventing a number.

Dates and phones that look “fine” in English

03/14/1988 and 1988-03-14 are readable for humans and wrong for v2 DTM — send 19880314. Phones pasted as (555)555-0148 in XTN.1 are a common AE when the receiver validates components 6 and 7. Insights in the HL7 viewer spell out both mistakes when you click the field.

What not to do on a ticket

Practice: paste the sample from the PID reference into the viewer, then open ticket-style repairs in the Sandbox.
